Traced origins to the plaster and gypsum works of William Jacobs at Newark and of James Cater and William Jacobs at Orston, the latter being a large newly built integrated works which opened in 1866. 1865 acquired by newly formed Vale of Belvoir & Newark Plaster, Cement & Mineral Co Ltd promoted by Jacobs and Carter to finance the new works. This was reconstructed in 1867 as Vale of Belvoir & Newark Plaster Co Ltd. In voluntary liquidation 1873 when assets acquired by Hardy & Co, its bankers, and traded as Vale of Belvoir & Newark Plaster Co until 1897 when acquired by the works' manager
