Traced origins to 1877 and the establishment of Callender & Sons, bitumen refiners and asphalt pavers, at Millbank, London. Relocated to Erith, Kent, 1880. Incorporated 1882 as Callender's Bitumen Telegraph & Waterproof Co Ltd. Thereafter, under (Sir) Thomas Callender, 1855-1938, focused on production and laying of insulated cables which soon dominated the business. 1945 merged with British Insulated Cables Ltd to form British Insulated Callender's Cables Ltd (BICC)
