Traced origins in business to William J Collins, 1856-1939, who developed a house building business in the Hornsey area of north London from the 1870s. By 1881 employing 17 men. Thereafter grew his business rapidly, building suburban housing on a speculative basis, particularly at Crouch End and later at Muswell Hill. Particularly noted for Roofield Estate development. His brother Frank was also a builder and on some projects the two worked in partnership. Two of W J Collins's sons, William B and Herbert, worked with their father and provided architectural input. From the 1910s the family started to develop building and architecture interests at Southampton
