Traced origins to 1864 when established by William Clarke, d1890, and Edward Benning at Gateshead to make winches for shipbuilding industry. Soon made steam powered winches. By 1874 known as Clarke, Chapman & Gurney. Diversified into other marine equipment including capstans, ballast pumps, cranes and boilers. From 1870s also making boilers for locomotives. From 1884 known as Clarke Chapman & Co. From 1880s manufacturing steam turbines and other equipment for on-board electricity generation along with associated products, eg searchlights. In this Charles Parsons, a junior partner until 1889, played a leading role. Incorporated 1893. In 20th century diversified into electricity generating plant for land use. 1969 acquired bridge and crane making business of Sir William Arrol & Co. 1977 merged with Reyrolle Parsons to form Northern Engineering Industries Ltd
