Established c1820s at Chesterfield as maltsters by William Burkitt, d1873. 1830s opened a grain dealing and importing branch at King's Lynn - where it had a warehouse and chartered ships - which by 1846 was run by William's son, also William, d1906. Another son, Samuel, in due course ran the Chesterfield business and the firm became known as W & S Burkitt. 1874-76 built large new maltings at Upper Langwith, near Chesterfield, and in due course the pre-existing maltings at Chesterfield, Mansfield and Stockwith were closed. The business was inherited by William's son, also William, d1920, and about the time of his death it was incorporated as W & S Burkitt Ltd. In the absence of an obvious Burkitt family heir to the business it was gradually reduced to a grain dealing business at Chesterfield
