Traced origins to 1851 when established by Francis Ravenscroft, 1829-1902, of Ede & Ravenscroft, bespoke tailors and gown makers, and William Lloyd Birkbeck. Established as a philanthropic venture to assist working people to purchase their home. Early on closely allied to London Mechanics' Institute, another philanthropic venture which was established in 1823 to provide technical education. Subsequently developed into Birkbeck Bank which occupied prestigious premises in Chancery Lane. Developed as a substantial vehicle for collecting working class savings and lending for house building/purchase, especially in London's inner suburbs. Collapsed 1911 due to its securities investment strategy
