Established c1570 under will of William Sheldon, a wealthy Warwickshire landowner, and developed in particular by his son Ralph, 1537-1613, and subsequently his son, also Ralph. Its early director was Richard Hyckes, d1621, also 'arrasmaker' to the Queen who cared for the extensive royal collection of tapestries. Emerged as a prestigious producer. Eclipsed after 1620 by Mortlake Tapestry Factory
