Traced origins to James Akroyd, 1753-1830, a successful yeoman clothier who established a worsted mill in 1805. His brother was Jonathan with whom he may have been in partnership until 1782. Business inherited by his son, Jonathan, b1782, who was principle from 1830, and built by him into a leading worsted textile manufacturer. From 1847 Edward Akroyd, 1810-87, developed it into possibly the largest worsted business in the world at the same time building a noted model village for his workers. Incorporated 1871. In decline from 1890s. 1893 many assets sold to Thomas Hoyle & Son Ltd. Edward Akroyd was also noted as a philanthropist and founder of the Yorkshire Penny Bank
