Traced origins to Philip Burnyeat who in c1800 started an innkeeping business at Whitehaven which soon diversified into butchery especially for supply of ships in which he took a financial interest. Also built other local business interests. From 1861 focused exclusively of ship store trade and in 1865 opened a Liverpool business, Burnyeat & Dalzell. Built business by investment in ships of others. Closed in Whitehaven 1876. Incorporated 1898. Opened other branches from 1898, eg at Antwerp in 1898, Manchester 1905, London 1920, Newcastle 1923,through acquisition of Thomas Harper & Sons, etc, etc. 1920 acquired Richard Nicholson & Sons of Liverpool to become Burnyeat Dalzell & Nicholson. Later known as Burnyeat Ltd. From 1950s revived fresh stores business through acquisitions. Still operating 1980s
