James Bennett, 1797-1859, was the son of William Bennett, c1818, of Salisbury, described variously as a silversmith and watchmaker. James emerged as a leading Salisbury businessman, developing his father's business as a retailer of luxury goods and being described as gold and silversmith, jeweller, watchmaker, supplier of writing desks, etc. Sometime Mayor, etc. 1849 acquired the 'Salisbury & Winchester Journal'
