Albert Brown, 1839-1913, of Glasgow worked in Japan from the late 1860s to the late 1880s before returning to Glasgow. He became influential with the Japanese government who nominated him for government posts, eg head of Marine Bureau charged with development of Japanese shipping and shipbuilding. Ordered ships for Japanese owners from Scottish yards and early on from time to time returned home to supervise their build. General Manager for the important Nippon Yusen Kaisha shipping line until 1889. From 1889 established his own business of Japanese merchants and consulting engineers at Glasgow, later known as A R Brown & Co and A R Brown McFarlane & Co Ltd
