Traced origins to 1885 when William Bruce Lindsay, d1928, established a wholesale coal merchanting business at Leith. At about the same time, alongside this, with his brother established a grain importing business. Soon diversified into coal exporting in which it became a leader. Incorporated 1915 as Bruce Lindsay Brothers Ltd. 1920s extended to Glasgow and to Hull. 1920s also took investments in collieries. Especially after 1945 bought up Scottish coal distribution businesses, eg James Waldie & Sons Ltd, and diversified into petrol distribution and retailing and car sales and repairs. Still operating 2024 as Bruce Lindsay Coal [2024]
