Incorporated in 1899 as the British subsidiary of Westinghouse Electric of East Pittsburgh, USA, when received rights to manufacture in Britain and its Empire excluding Canada. Built a major plant at Trafford Park, Manchester, which opened in 1902; it was reckoned the largest manufacturing works in Europe. Made electrical generating and distribution equipment. In 1907 the US parent was declared bankrupt. The British subsidiary remained in receivership until 1917 when acquired by Metropolitan Carriage Wagon & Finance Co Ltd. Wholly owned by Vickers from 1919 when renamed Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Co Ltd
