Notes:

Brotherhood family traced origins in business to early 19th century when William and his son, Rowland, were contractors working especially for railway companies, notably for Great Western Railway from 1835 from which it obtained track maintenance contracts. 1840s Rowland established railway engineering business at Chippenham making wide range of fittings, signaling, wagons, iron bridges, locomotives, etc. Closed 1869 following financial difficulties. 1867 Peter Brotherhood, 1838-1902, Rowland's son, established Brotherhood & Kittoe in Clerkenwell as engineers, especially to the brewing industry. Sole proprietor 1878. By early 1870s building innovative high speed steam engines which met with great success and had many applications. In 1881 relocated to Lambeth. Early 20th century briefly made motor vehicles. 1906 relocated to Peterborough where came to specialise in steam turbines, compressors and diesel engines. 1907 incorporated as Peter Brotherhood Ltd. 1937 converted to public company. 2008 acquired by Dresser Rand of USA
