Robert Brooks, 1790-1882, set up in business in 1820 as a London merchant trading with Australia. By 1830s he was a leader in this. Also had extensive shipowning interests until 1850s. 1855 joined in partnership by Robert Spence when known as Robert Brooks & Co. Involved in particular in the Australian wool trade and its finance but also developed wide ranging business interests connected with Australia. Succeeded in business by his sons and firm finally closed 1968
