Notes:

Established 1900 to acquire the Peru sugar estates of the Swayne family. These had been accumulated to Henry Swayne, b1800, who had arrived in Peru as a merchant in the 1820s. By 1840s he was in difficulties as a merchant and resumed as a sugar planter. In the process the Swayne family became greatly indebted to Wm & Jno Lockett, Liverpool merchants with trading interests in Peru. In 1900 these debts were settled through the establishment of the British Sugar Co Ltd, in which Locketts had a substantial equity interest, and the transfer to it of the Swayne estates. By 1920 Locketts owned the business outright when its estates were sold to local investors
