Traced origins to 1893 when established by Rev Thomas A Leonard of Colne, d1948, to provide group holidays that were 'physically bracing, mentally stimulating and spiritually uplifting'. Based at leased or built guest houses (18 by 1913). 1964 renamed Countrywide Holidays Association, continuing as a provider of outdoor holidays. Closed 2002. 1913 Leonard left CHA to form Holiday Fellowship, later HF Holidays Ltd, to focus on holidays for working class. HF continues in 2014. Closely associated with Co-operative Movement
