Notes:

Formed by Arthur and William Hazlewood in c1905 at Belper, Derbyshire, to make table sauces and, later, vinegar, pickles, gravy browning, custard powder, etc. By 1930s known as Hazlewood & Co (Products) Ltd with headquarters at Derby. At this time established a vertically integrated business with interests in bottle making and printing, including, inter alia, Hazlewood's Glass Bottles Ltd. Reorganised in 1942 as Hazlewood & Co (Proprietary) Ltd. 1970s, when a public company, acquired in a reverse take over by Beetroot Co and Humber Foods, the latter having been established at Hull in c1950 by Tony Hickson. Revived and grew rapidly by acquisition into a leading UK food processing business with 51 plant by 1990s. Increasingly specialised in chilled, frozen and other prepared foods including sandwiches.
