Traced origins to 1830s when Thomas Hardman, a farmer, started woollen manufacture using handlooms. 1860 built Fernhill Mills. 1867 started cloth finishing and in c1870s started production of cloths for mechanical purposes. 1894 incorporated. Came to specialise in the production of 'woollen paper-makers' felts' but also made cloths for a wide range of other industries. Converted to a public company in 1938.
