Notes:

Leading harpsichord and later piano makers. Traces origins to Burkat Shudi [Burkhardt Tschudi], 1702-73, who established a harpsichord workshop in London in c1729. From 1761 John Broadwood was apprenticed to Tschudi, in 1769 married his daughter and in 1770 joined the firm as partner. Tschudi retired 1771 and died in 1773 when his son, Burkat Shudi jun, 1737-1803, and his son in law, John Broadwood, 1732-1812, inherited the business. By 1782 Broadwood alone led the business. By late 18th century making pianofortes and gave up harpsichord making in early 1790s. Known as Broadwood & Son from 1795 and as Sons from 1807. Major producers and retailers throughout 19th century holding royal warrant and selling overseas. 1902 moved from Westminster to Hackney and later Hendon and Acton. Continues as John Broadwood & Sons Ltd based at Whitby [2024]
