Established in Leamington in 19th century by the Nelson family who developed a range of business interests including in particular: gelatine manufacture, cement manufacture and trade in frozen meat from New Zealand and Australia. The latter came to trade in New Zealand as Nelson Brothers Ltd and was subsequently acquired by Vestey Group. The gelatine business was established by George Nelson who originally was a pharmacist who manufactured Leamington Salts. The business was renamed George Nelson, Dale & Co Ltd following the entry as partner of Thomas Bellamy Dale, an industrial chemist from London. Its Emscote Mills were extensive and the business also built workers' houses and Nelson Working Men's Club. The firm also made lozengers, soups and baking powder. It was an important manufacturer of photographic gelatine, being associated with the Warwick Dry Plate Co, and supplied Ilford Ltd. Benefited especially 1939-45 from supply in connection with aerial photography. Charles Nelson & Co Ltd manufactured cement at Stockton
