Established by (Sir) James Bailey who built Bailey's Hotel in mid 1870s; it emerged as one of London's most fashionable. By 1887 operating two luxury hotels - Bailey's Hotel, Gloucester Road, London, and South Kensington Hotel, Queen's Square Terrace, London. 1894 sold to Spiers & Pond Ltd, a leading catering business but continued to be managed by Bailey. Started a hotel building programme, constructing hotels under 'Empire' label. By c1900 the group comprised Bailey's Hotel and South Kensington Hotel, London; Granville Hotel, Ramsgate; Empire Hotel, Bath; Empire Hotel, Buxton; Empire Hotel, Lowestoft; Metropole Hotel, Blackpool; Palace Hotel, Hastings
