Manufacturer of plastics and plastic goods under the Xylonite brand, the first artificially made commercial plastic. Incorporated in 1877 to acquire the business of Daniel Spill & Co Ltd of Homerton. Established major plant at Brantham, Essex, in 1887 and later another at Hale End, Walthamstow. All production had been transferred these from Homerton by 1900. Early successful products were washable collars but a vast range of other plastic goods were produced. 1938 reorganised under a holding company with the operating companies being BX Plastics Ltd, Halex Ltd and Cascelloid Ltd. 1939 The Distillers Co Ltd acquired a half interest in BX Plastics Ltd. 1961 fully owned by Distillers Co Ltd and in 1963 merged with parts of Union Carbide's business, including Bakelite Ltd, to form Bakelite Xylonite Ltd.
