Established in 1967 to hold the assets of 14 iron and steel producers nationalised in that year. This represented 90% of UK industry. Subsequently closed marginal plant, eg at Consett, Corby and Ravenscraig, near Motherwell, and focused on development of integrated plant in South Wales, South Yorkshire, Scunthorpe and Teeside. Privatised in 1988 as British Steel Plc. Merged with Koninklijke Hoogovens of Netherlands in 1999 to created Corus Group. Subsequently acquired by Tata Steel 2007
