The Barrett family were important sugar plantation owners at Jamaica from the 17th century. In the mid 18th century these were managed by Edward Barrett, 1734-1798, when they extended to 50,000 acres. They were subsequently inherited by his two grandsons who included Edward Barrett Moulton Barrett, 1785-1857, father of the poet and writer Elizabeth Barrett Browning
