Established 1910 by Stanley Roberts, b1889, to teach driving skills and mechanical knowledge of motor car. Expanded rapidly 1914-18, from 1935 following introduction of statutory driving test, and 1939-45. 1920s Roberts also developed similar services for training pilots and in 1931 merged his mechanical training interests to form Chelsea College of Aeronautical & Automobile Engineering. By 1950s BSM was a major force in driver training with branches throughout country. Acquired by new owners in 1973 who introduced instructor franchises. 1990 bought by management and floated 1993. 1998 acquired by RAC and in 1999 bought by Lex Motoring Services. Acquired by Norwich Union 2005
