Notes:

1948 formed, as a publicly owned entity, to acquire and operate much of Britain's road haulage industry - general haulage, specialised transport services and parcel deliveries. By 1951 it operated 41,000 lorries. Also acquired ferry services for haulage services to Ireland and Europe. Ultimately vested in British Transport Commission and run by its Road Haulage Executive. Privatisation commenced very soon after a government change in 1953 and by 1956 the remaining business - for which there were not buyers - comprised British Road Services Ltd, BRS (Parcels) Ltd, BRS (Contracts) Ltd, BRS (Pickfords) Ltd and BRS (Meat Haulage) Ltd, together operating 16,000 vehicles.1963 vested in Transport Holding Co. From 1960s reorganisation continued with some sales and some acquisitions. 1969 parcel / freight interests acquired by the publicly owned National Freight Corp which was subsequently privatised as National Freight Consortium. BRS name given up in 1990s [2024]
