Developed rapidly from early 1830s after the construction by the Earl of Stamford of a private railway linking the quarry, which he owned, to the newly opened Leicester & Swannington Railway. In decline in 1840s but revived from the 1840s. Ownership of the quarry was reorganised in 1865 with the formation of Groby Granite Co Ltd in which Lord Stamford had a major interest. Quarry was still operating in 1940s
