Traced origins to the engineering activities of British railway companies nationalised in 1948. Then vested in British Transport Commission and managed by its Railway Executive. Manufactured, repaired and maintained locomotives and rolling stock. Early 1960s transferred to the newly formed British Railways Board and in 1970 formed into British Rail Engineering Ltd, otherwise known as BREL. Privatised from late 1980s
