Traced origins to c1860 when established by John Arnold, c1816-80. Supplied high quality silica sands. He was succeeded in business by his son, Joseph, 1841-1911, and in 1918 business was renamed Joseph Arnold & Sons. 1918 opened London office. Operated own canal boats until 1923. 1937 incorporated as Joseph Arnold & Sons Ltd. Connected with Leighton Buzzard Light Railway Co Ltd which it fully owned from 1963 until its closure in 1982. Traded as Arnold Sands from 1990s
