Established in 1944 as Council of Industrial Design to promote use of good design in British industry. Promoted by Board of Trade. Initially led by Gordon Russell and had two divisions, Industrial and information. The former liaised with manufacturers to improve their designs while the latter encouraged the public in its awareness of good design. Noted for its 1946 exhibition 'Britain Can Make It' which focused on consumer goods and emphasized the need for revival in industrial design in order to cope with renewed competition in the postwar era. 1970s renamed Design Council. 2011 became a registered charity and later that year merged into Commission for Architecture & the Built Environment
