John Boydell, 1720-1804, was a leading London print publisher and retailer who originated from North Wales. Started in business in City of London in 1751. He himself was an engraver but he generally commissioned other engravers and bought up second hand plates. Noted for his publishing of engravings of historical portraits and of Shakespearean characters. Developed impressive galleries in Cheapside and Pall Mall. In decline from 1790s and failed 1803. His partner from 1786 was Josiah Boydell, 1752-1817. He was close to the bookseller, George Nicol [2023]
