Major manufacturer of motor cars, commercial vehicles, buses and components. Established, under pressure from government, in 1968 as British Leyland Motor Corp Ltd through the merger of British Motor Holdings Ltd and Leyland Motor Corp Ltd. Led by Donald Stokes, later Lord Stokes. The resulting entity suffered from model duplication, scattered production over multiple plants, and financial weakness. It therefore struggled. 1975 nationalised as British Leyland Ltd and renamed BL Ltd in 1978, later BL PLc. 1979 entered a collaborative arrangement with Honda involving equity exchange and model development. 1986 name changed to Rover Group Plc and 1988 sold to British Aerospace [2024]
