William Champion, 1709-89, was initially employed in the Bristol brassworks of his father, Nehemiah Champion, 1678-1747. 1746 moved to Warmley where, with financial support of, inter alia, his father and the Goldney and Handford families, he established a new plant to smelt brass and zinc and to make products from them, for example, pans, wire and pins. This emerged as a major integrated industrial plant. Champion was the first producer of zinc in Europe, patenting his process in 1737. c1768, when he was in financial difficulties, the plant was acquired by the old established Bristol Brass & Copper Co
