Established in 1683 as a department of the Admiralty to takeover responsibility for supplying the Royal Navy, at home and abroad, with victuals (mostly food and drink in bulk) in order to provide a more efficient service than that previously provided direct from private contractors. Otherwise known as Commissioners for the Victualling of the Navy. Sometimes built own breweries, grain mills, slaughterhouses, bakeries, etc, near naval bases to ensure better quality of provisions but most frequently contracted for supplies from merchant 'contractors'. Therefore a major manufacturer of food and beverage products. Also supplied, 1793-1813, the army overseas. A sister organisation to the Navy Board. Closed 1832 when responsibilities transferred to the Admiralty Board
