Traces origins to 1928 when established at Heston by Alan Muntz, 1899-1985, and Sir Henry N St V Norman. Provided aircraft servicing and repair and other ground services to aircraft operators as well as, post war, providing air transport services. Services included air training, especially during 1939-45. Throughout history has had a close connection with armed services in providing aircraft and other support. In early 1950s first airline to be awarded a troop carrying contract. By 1950s largest independent UK airline having been supported, inter alia, by S Pearson & Son Ltd. 1959 relocated to Hurn. 1959 acquired Bristow Helicopters. 1960 merged with the aircraft interests of British & Commonwealth Shipping Group and Hunting Clan to form British United Airways Ltd. Subsequently know as Airwork International and became wholly owned by B&CSG. Renamed Airwork Ltd in 1980. Subsequently several owners including Short Brothers Ltd of Belfast/Bombardier of Canada and Vosper Thornycroft. Continues in 2013 as a subsidiary of Babcock International Plc
