The Symington family traces their connection with port production at Oporto to Andrew James Symington, d1939, who arrived from Scotland in 1882 to join the Graham family of port producers and shippers. From 1905 he was a partner in Warre & Co which he later controlled. Subsequently the Symington family acquired other port businesses and brands including Dows, Taylors and Cockburns. In 2013 controlled a large proportion of the port trade and its associated grape production activities and was well known as a leading Anglo Portuguese port business
