Traced origins to 1961 when (Sir) Adam Thompson and John de la Haye established Caledonian Airways (Prestwich) Ltd as a Scottish charter airline. 1970 acquired the major carrier, British United Airways Ltd to form in 1971 British Caledonian Airways Ltd, a major UK carrier able to compete with British Airways Ltd. At the same time acquired certain scheduled services from British Airways. Damaged by competition in 1980s and acquired by British Airways Plc in 1987
