From late 1840s developed iron ore mining interests in Cumbria and was closely associated with the Ulverston & Lancaster Railway Co and Solway Junction Railway Co. Early 1850s acquired from Glamorgan Coal & Iron Co iron production interests at Tondu, South Wales, and associated iron ore and coal mines. By 1871 operated c12 collieries in South Wales. Also associated with Llynvi & Ogmore Railway Co and Porthcawl Dock. Merged South Wales interests into Llynvi, Tondu & Ogmore Coal & Iron Co Ltd in early 1870s.
