Established 1902 as a joint venture of Imperial Tobacco Co (Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd of Britain and American Tobacco Co of USA under which both companies agreed not to trade in the other's domestic market. Initially chaired by James 'Buck' Duke, 1856-1925. Developed international markets for its cigarette sales, including production plant and distribution networks. 1912 American Tobacco Co disposed of its shareholding and BAT listed in London. By interwar period had emerged as a leading British business. In 1960s to 1980s diversified away from tobacco with major investments made in Britain, US and other countries, notably in the industrial [eg Wiggins Teape], retailing [eg Argos] and financial services [eg Eagle Star] sectors. 1976 reorganised as BAT Industries Ltd. 1990s divested its non tobacco interests. From 1998, as British American Tobacco Plc, through acquisitions consolidated its position as a world leading tobacco business
