Traces origins to 1834 when established in Soho as a perfumer by Hyacinthe Mars Rimmel who had relocated from Paris. His son Eugene Rimmel, 1820-87, worked for it as an apprentice. He subsequently substantially developed the business until his death in 1887 when it had retail branches across Europe. In particular used advertising and catalogues. Business inherited by his sons and after 1945 acquired by Robert and Rose Caplin. Subsequently other owners until acquired in 1996 by Coty Inc of USA. Continues in 2013
