Late 1780s George Bishop, who had formerly work in Holland and who was connected to the Kent gentry, established a gin distilling business at Maidstone, marketing under the brand of Maidstone Geneva. Acquired an Act of Parliament in order to do so. Met with considerable success initially. Sold 1818 and closed 1819 when building converted to a steam grain mill
