Traced origins to Thomas Ainsworth who early on had a flax spinning mill at Penny Bridge. By 1837 he acquired Cleator Moor Thread Mills which had been established by Henry Birley in 1800. Operated variously as Ainsworth & Stirling, Ainsworth, Stirling & Cuppidge and Ainsworth & Sons. Incorporated 1898 and in 1900 merged into Linen Thread Co Ltd. By 1916 largest flax spinning mill / linen thread mill in Britain
