Had its roots in the Spanish tobacco products business of Don Jose Carreras y Ferrer who settled in London in the early 19th century to sell cigars. The business gradually expanded under his son, Don Jose Joaquin, to make and retail snuff, etc, and in 1860s started to receive royal warrants. 1894 acquired by William J Yapp and in c1900 began to make cigarettes, introducing well known brands, and emerged as a major tobacco processing business. 1903 public company. In 20th century also expanded through acquisition of several tobacco businesses. 1928 opened major works at Mornington Crescent, Camden Town. 1958 merged with Rothmans of Pall Mall
