Traced origins to 1893 when established to acquire the Marland Brick & Clay Works Ltd which had been established by the local landowner, William A B Wren, in 1877, to quarry clay and make bricks and tiles. He subsequently built a light railway, the Torrington & Marland Railway, which opened in 1880 to connect the works to the main railway network. Subsequently the brickmaking and clay quarrying activities were carried on by separated businesses, the latter by North Devon Clay Co Ltd which was incorporated in 1893 for the purpose. In 1891 brickworks was operated by Marland North Devon Clay Co Ltd. Brick and tile works closed 1942. North Devon Clay acquired by Watts, Blake, Bearne & Co Ltd in 1968
