Traced origins to Thomas Brindley, d1888, who, by 1860, was working as a coppersmith. c1870 joined by Samuel Briggs, d1928, when emerged as a specialist brewing plant manufacturer known after 1888 as Samuel Briggs & Co. 1912 acquired Buxton & Thornley. In 1929 other acquisitions were T R Shercliffe & Co Ltd and Thornewill & Warham Ltd. The latter was established at Burton in 1747 by Thomas Thornewill as an edge tool maker and, from mid 19th century, made steam engines and locomotives especially for breweries and collieries. Briggs subsequently known as Briggs of Burton Ltd. Acquired in mid 1980s its chief rival, Robert Morton & Co Ltd
