Traces origins to 1924 when established as British Ropes Ltd to acquire eight mostly wire rope making businesses, including Bullivant & Co Ltd, London; George Craddock Ltd, Wakefield; Craven & Speeding & Co Ltd, Sunderland; D H & G Haggie Ltd, Sunderland; Haggie Bros Ltd, Gateshead; R S Newall & Son Ltd, Liverpool; and Thomas & William Smith Ltd, Newcastle. In 1925-26 acquired a further 18 wire and fibre rope making and wire drawing businesses. Embarked upon a rationalisation programme resulting in concentration of production at four works by 1940s. Restructured 1934. Post 1945 continued acquisition of UK businesses and expanded internationally. 1974 renamed Bridon Ltd. Continues as Bridon International Ltd, a subsidiary of Melrose Plc
