Thomas Coram, c1668-1715, was a London businessman and merchant much concerned with North American trade. Working in London by c1691 and for ten years from 1694 was at Boston and Taunton, USA, establishing a shipyard and building ships. An expert on naval affairs and on North American colonies. Also sometime a gunpowder manufacturer. Best known for establishing the eponymous Foundling Hospital for destitute children
