The Bute family, Earls, later Marquesses, were large Scottish landowners who inherited much land around Cardiff, South Wales, in the late 18th century from Lord Windsor's family. Under 2nd Marquess, 1793-1848, the coal resources of these estates, along with railway and port infrastructure, were developed on a huge scale to create massive wealth. Development continued under 3rd and 4th Marquesses. Also owners of much urban property at Cardiff. Coal, railway and port assets nationalised in late 1940s and urban property sold at same time
