John Briant, 1748-1829, worked as a bell founder by 1779 although trained as a clockmaker. Inherited his father's clockmaking business in 1785 and became known for turret, etc, clocks. Made and installed bells throughout Hertfordshire and in neighbouring counties. Clockmaking business passed to Skerman family and continued to 1930s. Sold bellfounding business to Thomas Mears of Whitechapel in 1825
